Joe Gastaldo, MD, System Medical Director for Infectious Disease, explains if it’s safe to get both the COVID and flu vaccines at the same time. And, in the same arm?
It is safe for individuals to receive the flu shot and the COVID vaccine at the same time. This can be done in separate arms or it can be done in the same arm separated by a few inches. It boils down to this: at-risk individuals especially need to get both vaccines. Dr. Gastaldo’s parents, for example, who are retired, wanted to separate the vaccines by a few weeks. That’s okay. But most importantly, we don’t want to lose the opportunity to vaccinate anybody who’s eligible to receive either of these vaccines.
